Ghost House Bearing Another Grudge?

Viral hauntings set to continueLike a chalk-faced, black-haired female ghoul crawling backwards at you across a ceiling, the Grudge franchise refuses to die. Two years after Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures denied any possibility of a fourth American instalment, BD have the scoop that The Grudge 4 is indeed in the works. It's a curse that keeps on being reborn, which is appropriate, given that that's the hook of the entire unwieldy series. Beginning with short films and two Japanese TV movies in the late 90s, director Takashi Shimizu spun the Ju-On tale into two theatrical Japanese features in 2003. He then helmed a Hollywood remake of the first starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in 2004, and stayed around for 2006's The Grudge 2, which again featured Gellar but was a stand-alone movie not based on Ju-On 2. Following this so far? Then in 2009, we have two new non-Shimizu Japanese entires in Old Lady in White and Girl in Black (released together as Ju-On: White Ghost / Black Ghost), plus the American DTV Grudge 3, directed by Toby Wilkins, starring Shawneee Smith from the Saw films, and Counsellor Deanna Troi. And that, apart from a Wii game, was the lot, until now. BD are unsure whether we're looking at a reboot or a sequel, but to be honest, given the overlapping and repeated material running through all the films already, it doesn't make a great deal of difference. Thing is, they're never not scary, so expect Kayaoko and Toshio to creep you out in spite of yourselves again sometime in the next year.

Signs Ross Mathews to New Talk Show Pilot Development and Talent Deal (Exclusive) "It will likely be my large shot," Mathews informs THR about his new talk show deal. "It's my large show. We are working it now, however i have always aspired to be considered a talk show host since I had been just a little kid becoming an adult in Washington condition. Incorporated within this deal may be the shot to actually shoot that demonstrate for E!, and I am within the moon about this.Inch Audiences got an idea of what to anticipate from Mathews' new show when he guest-located for that second time on Chelsea Recently Monday evening with guest Joey Lawrence. Following the tape, we spoke to Mathews about Monday's show, and what he envisions for that new talk show he's developing for E!. The Hollywood Reporter: You simply guest-located on Chelsea Recently. That which was the highlight from the show for you personally? Mathews: I acquired to complete the entire roundtable, after which Joey Lawrence was the guest interview. And hello, I have been like dorking out over Joey Lawrence since i have would be a son. It had been just like a boyhood dream become a reality to speak to him. THR: Have you have any good dish from him? Mathews: Used to do request him if he ever dated Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and there is a pause. There is a pause, so my investigative journalism reached the main of this. I seem like there is a history there. I love to consider myself hard-striking, but teasing with Joey Lawrence got when it comes to that. THR: How have you feel when E! offered the deal? Mathews:When E! found me and stated they desired to expand my role about the network including shooting an airplane pilot, I had been thrilled, however it felt right. I am talking about, I labored very hard so when you are 'Ross the Intern,' I recieve it. I had been behind the curtain responding to phones from the Tonight Show with hopes for being a talk-show host which Hollywood dream happened in my experience. But, I realize you don't get authenticity like this immediately. Sure, I had been on national television about the Tonight Show since way back when and years, however i understood that many people did not think I possibly could ever have a show. I understood it. I have always known that this is the one factor which i would ever be a master at. But gradually through the years and showing myself and developing that voice, after i discovered that E! desired to produce this deal, I felt like okay. It's well gained and I am ready. I'm ready. Photos: The Evolution of Chelsea Handler THR: How's your brand-new talk show likely to be not the same as what's available now? Mathews: Previously 10 years, we have built a very strong foundation not just using the Tonight Show, however obviously previously couple of years, standing on [Chelsea Handler's] show each week. The only real factor that separates everyone -- because I don't think you'd re-invent the wheel for any talk show -- it comes down to perspective and that is things i spent yesteryear decade developing is my perspective. You will find a lot of funny people, and thus many gifted people, however the one factor nobody has is my undertake the planet. So, when I am developing my show, that's the focus. My energy, my spontaneity, and my unique voice, and I am not speaking relating to this squeaky factor the following. THR: How does one describe your perspective? Mathews: I take lots of pride in controlling to become funny without getting a victim in the finish of my joke. I laugh in a really dark joke around the next one, but my jokes, Personally i think, don't need to hurt anybody to become really funny. That's the main goal associated with a reveal that I'll do has been funny with no victim. So, it will be 'LOL.' It will be spontaneous and will also be a great time. Listen, it is a crappy world available at this time. Unemployment reaches almost 15 % in certain states. Young people need grounds to smile, and I wish to provide a half-hour of sit lower, just relax beside me, and let us 'LOL' together. It will likely be a contented moment. THR: Are you going to have your personal partner? Mathews: Listen, I am not delusional enough to consider which i could do that on my own. Every strong voice appears to bounce off others and I am considering who I would like there beside me. That do I believe is funny? That do I believe the crowd will react to? And I am getting it right. This type of chance does not plainly constantly. I am getting it right. THR: Who definitely are the first guest? Mathews:I am buddies with Gwyneth Paltrow. She always explained that she'd be my first guest. So, we'll find out if that ever happens. I am likely to call that favor in a single day. One Day: Film Review

Lone Scherfig, the Danish director who is fast becoming one of the foremost interpreters of British culture, has performed a bit of magic in One Day, the film adaptation of David Nicholls' best-selling novel. The literary conceit behind the novel was that a reader could track the lives and friendship of two characters - lower class, politically engaged Emma Morley and wealthy, handsome Dexter Mayhew - over two decades through a brief snapshot of their evolving relationship revealed on a single day, that being July 15 of each year. In this film version, Scherfig (An Education) has orchestrated each short segment so the episodes flow smoothly together, making it feel of a whole rather than disjointed bits with costume changes. The classic three-act structure of most romantic dramas isn't so much dismissed as subverted into tiny beats that chart the ups-and-downs of a relationship that threatens to turn romantic about as often as it threatens to crumble apart. With two glamorous stars in Anne Hathaway andJim Sturgessand an appealing mix of romantic locations, the Focus Features movie should attract a following from college age upwards, no doubt skewing toward female audiences. Nicholls adapted his own novel to the screen but someone along the way - Scherfig? - gave him some killer notes for he has considerably improved the story from his novel. The novel represented one of the longest cases of coitus interruptusin literary history. It began with the couple, newly graduated from university in Edinburgh, in bed in 1988 but they don't consummate their feelings for one another until 2001! Much worse, the novel's Dex is a louse from Day One. Which makes Em a loser for mooning over him for so many years. In the movie though, Nicholls has considerably freshened up his male protagonist by letting his charm and not his alcoholism shine through the early years. Drink only takes its toll as his career as a "TV presenter" collapses. Now you see what Em sees in Dex - and why she fights for him to reclaim his better side. Other than reducing Dex's globetrotting to occasional excursions to France, the movie stays true to the novel's dramatic trajectory but makes each character more likeable and less bedraggled. You actually now root for them to hook up and wonder (as you do in the novel) what takes them so long. They do begin in Emma's bed on the dawn following graduation night. This is July 15, 1988, which is St. Swithin Day in Britain, the thematic purpose of which is never announced. Em's glasses are supposed to make her an ugly duckling - with Hathaway in the role this hoary device fails miserably - but she does catch the young woman's coltish behavior and sly wit very well. Meanwhile Sturgess is the epitome of an impetuous charmer that nevertheless has a talent for self-destruction, something a young woman might find dangerously attractive. The movie rushes through their lighthearted early years as good friends, where Em finds the temerity to call Dex's dad (Ken Stott) a "bourgeois fascist" - this remark occurs off-camera - and Dex finds himself enormously attracted to Em only to admit he feels that way about nearly every pretty woman he encounters. His TV career skyrockets while Em struggles to find herself in low-wage jobs as a waitress at a horrible Mexican restaurant in London and later as a teacher. Eventually, Dex crashes to earth at more or less the same time Em becomes an accomplished writer of children's books. The point is made, and then made again, that Dex is at his best whenever Em is around. Otherwise, as his mother (Patricia Clarkson) sadly says, "I worry that you're not very nice anymore." Em develops a relationship with a third-rate stand-up comic, Ian (Rafe Spall), which is clearly a mistake, while Dex runs through girlfriends such as over-caffeinated fellow presenter Suki (Georgia King) to wind up finally married to the lovely but high maintenance Sylvie (Romola Garai) with whom he has a daughter. Supporting characters are even more peripheral in the movie - quick sketches of personalities to indicate the passage of interests by the protagonists. Those that are allowed to emerge more fully as time passes are Dex's parents, his moral compass when Em is not around, and Ian, the comic who feels he must be perpetually "on" to keep people, even his girlfriend, entertained. Getting somewhat lost in the transition to the screen is Em's intellectual curiosity, her social conscience and ambitions. Dex calls her the "smartest person I know" but you don't really know why. What is thankfullylost in transition though is Dex's continual irresponsibility and thoughtlessness. This is considerably toned down here so he is able, as his mother predicts, to become a good man. Scherfig makes the most of each segment, cleverly introduced by on-screen titles that blend into each new scene. She zeroes in on quick dialogue exchanges or transitional elements to establish new situations and priorities, then moves the relationship at the heart of her story along with considerable skill. Working with editor Barney Pilling, the director turns the evolution of Em and Dex into a contemplation on friendship and love that is in direct contrast to the wham-bam-thank-you-m'am of many screen romances. In a curious way, this movie is the direct inversion of another fine romantic film this summer, Friends With Benefits. That film drenched the couple in sex only for love to emerge. Here a friendship begun with a deep need for the other person's companionship and approval only gradually gives way to romance and then love. The filmmakers wisely chose not to place much emphasis on aging their fairly young actors but rather leave this up to these capable thespians. Hathaway, who has a convincing English accent, does shorten her hair for the later sequences but more importantly she shows you that Em has slowly come to learn and accept who she is and become much stronger for this evolution. With this film, Sturgess stakes his claim as the new Hugh Grant only without the fussy mannerisms that has infected many of the latter's performances. Sturgess can now play any number of charming Englishmen with any number of weaknesses and flaws that women easily forgive. Cinematographer Benoît Delhomme and production designer Mark Tidesley give the drama the gloss of the film's many splendid locations around Edinburgh, Paris, London and various country and sea sides without indulging in too much nostalgia for the changing periods. Rachel Portman's lush and wistful score accentuates the film's themes and the ultimate melancholy that comes in the final chapter of Em and Dex. Emmys 2011: Can Anyone Break 'The Daily Show's' Emmy Streak?

Jon Stewart himself might be feeling a little greedy at this point. Never in the history of the variety, music and comedy series category, established in 1951, has one show had such a monster run. The Daily Show has 14 wins, eight of them sequential series trophies. But with Jay and Dave snubbed and Fallon and Conan in the mix, a sea change could finally be on the horizon for a cool category plagued by predictability.Related Topics•Emmys The Colbert Report Comedy Central Why It Could Win: Of any series on network or cable -- variety, comedy drama, reality -- nothing makes me laugh like a fool more than The Colbert Report. Between faux-blowhard Stephen Colbert's incredible aptitude for newsworthy absurdism and so-weird-they're-wonderful moments, like his musical road trip to Nashville to hang with Jack White, he'sthe most entertaining personality on the tube. It's inconceivable this series hasn't won (though it's scored two Emmys for writing) because, frankly, Colbert is a helluva lot more fun than The Daily Show. Why It Could Lose: As he has often joked on the air, Colbert's worst enemy is Stewart, with whom he shares not only a network but also a post-primetime slot. Until now, the race seemingly has always come down to them. Yes, Colbert is essentially "acting" on his show, so voters have favored -- and might continue to favor -- Stewart's real-life approach to news analysis over spoofy theatrics. PHOTOS: Emmy Nomination Snubs, Shockers and Surprises Late Night with Jimmy Fallon NBC Why It Could Win: On Emmy nominations morning, still giddy on the phone from New York, Jimmy Fallon said something interesting: "We are the only late-night show that is truly a comedy, music and variety series, aside from SNL." He's right: Among the weeknight nominees in this category, Fallon consistently creates the most original music content, comedy sketches (many filmed) and variety-esque displays of silliness (beer pong with January Jones!). The Lorne Michaels protege inherited a tough-to-beat legacy from Conan O'Brien and has handled the honor with utmost aplomb. His killer Emmy hosting gig last year didn't hurt, either. Why It Could Lose: Fallon could suffer from the new-kid-on-the-block shutout that plagued O'Brien, whose NBC series Late Night never won. PHOTOS: David Strick 2011 Emmy Nominees Saturday Night Live NBC Why It Could Win: With a slew of outstanding hosts last season, including guest-star nominees Tina Fey, Zach Galifianakis and front-runner Justin Timberlake, the 36-year-old staple has managed to retain its youthful appeal (digital shorts starring Michael Bolton!) while maintaining the old-school spirit of its creator, Michaels. Head writer Seth Meyers, also nominated, is the perfect merry prankster to oversee SNL's antics in the modern era, and its cool cast -- Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudeikis, et al. -- has made a dying genre relevant again. Why It Could Lose: The variety, music and comedy race has morphed into something unfriendly to SNL (it last won in 1993) as its format no longer has a peer. Conan TBS Why It Could Win: O'Brien hasn't lost any of the underdog quirk that made his NBC series such a hit among young viewers throughout the 1990s. His well-publicized Battle With the Man in early 2010 only bolstered his appeal, and even though his TBS incarnation pulls in modest numbers (about 1 million viewers), O'Brien is a survivor, and Emmy loves a meaty backstory. And hey, being on basic cable hasn't hurt The Daily Show one bit. Why It Could Lose: Voters might feel a nod for Conan is premature this year and that his inclusion in the absence of other stronger contenders -- no Letterman, Kimmel or Handler? -- feels a bit gratuitous. Real Time with Bill Maher HBO Why It Could Win: No one provokes with less self-consciousness than perennial nominee (and loser) Bill Maher. The stand-up comedian and filmmaker (Religulous) clearly has an impressive reach in the industry, assembling killer lineups of controversial talking heads each week, including the bipartisan, controversial likes of Richard Clarke, Ann Coulter, Eliot Spitzer and Dan Savage. Love him or loathe him, Maher is the only soul on TV brave enough to shirk any pressure to be likable. Why It Could Lose: His acerbic routine, though his calling card, is a turn-off to some. And airing only once a week, on Fridays, doesn't position him to compete with Stewart and Colbert, who get to skewer four days a week. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Comedy Central Why It Could Win: Stewart is the most trusted man in news and an outspoken advocate for U.S. soldiers and 9/11 victims. He's also overseen the winningest variety show in Emmy history. And even when Daily Show side bits don't kill, Stewart is always good. Oh, and he just returned from a surprise trip to visit the troops in Afghanistan. Why It Could Lose: The show's eight-year Emmy monopoly. With a lot of new names elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that voters are craving new blood. 'Downton' Stars Collaborate On-Screen and Onstage

LONDON (AP) There are secret romances, wars and endless back-stabbing on "Downton Abbey," the British TV series that follows the lives of the aristocratic Grantham family and their servants in the early 20th century. But off-screen, there is music.Elizabeth McGovern and Michelle Dockery, who co-star in the Emmy-nominated drama, are collaborating musically, and Dockery is hoping to sing on McGovern's next project with her folk rock band, Sadie and the Hotheads."She asked me to sing in the band and I'm hoping to be more involved in the second album that she's bringing out," Dockery says. The band, which features McGovern on vocals and acoustic guitar, released their debut album, "I Can Wait," in 2007. Dockery, who has sung jazz, has performed backup with the group.Dockery stars as McGovern's eldest daughter, Lady Mary Crawley, on the hit PBS "Masterpiece" series, which is nominated for 11 Emmy Awards, including one for outstanding miniseries or movie. McGovern is nominated for outstanding lead actress for her role as American heiress Cora Crawley, the Countess of Grantham.Dockery and McGovern first worked together on music on the "Downton" set."It's quite a picture, actually, of us sitting in our trailers with our dresses hiked up playing the guitar all afternoon," Dockery says in a recent interview at Highclere Castle, a Victorian castle in the English countryside of Berkshire that sits amid 1,000 acres of breathtaking parkland. Highclere, often used for film shoots, doubles as the Downton Abbey estate.Dockery, who starred as Eliza Doolittle in an Old Vic production of "Pygmalion" and played Ophelia in "Hamlet" at the Crucible Theatre, made her TV debut in the British miniseries "Hogfather" in 2006. McGovern, 50, has appeared onstage in New York and London, and earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her role in the 1981 movie "Ragtime." Dockery, who has sung jazz, has performed backup with the group.Dockery stars as McGovern's eldest daughter, Lady Mary Crawley, on the hit PBS "Masterpiece" series, which is nominated for 11 Emmy Awards, including one for outstanding miniseries or movie. McGovern, 50, has appeared onstage in New York and London, and earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her role in the 1981 movie "Ragtime." CBS: 'Person Of Interest' (Live Blog)

Jeffrey R. Staab/CBS Maybe you're not a CBS person, but the network does procedurals like nobody's business, and this show has loads of potential as Michael Emerson guides Jim Caviezel around trying to stop crimes before they happen. Pilot was a little long on exposition, but made me want to watch more (and possibly a lot more). CBS: Person Of Interest (Live Blog) TCA J.J. Two Snow Whites, Two Linda Lovelace Biopics: The Dueling Movies Trend Continues

A couple of years back I investigated the phenomenon of dueling movies -- a set of movies with similar subject material which are developed and launched by different galleries almost concurrently. With that time, penguins, pigs, bugs, volcanoes, masters of magic, Scottish heroes and Truman Capote had all become the dueling movie treatment. Since that time there has been more double-assumes screen: notable good examples include films about retail center guards (Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Observe and Report last year) and flicks about pals who have sexual intercourse (No Strings Attached and Buddies With Benefits this year). And also the trend continues. Universal Pictures and Relativity Media happen to be involved in a wicked witch-style fight over little people lover Snow Whitened. Alternatively finish from the character spectrum, infamous porn star Linda Lovelace presently has two teams fighting on her recognition too, with Malin Ackerman starring in a single biopic scheduled for release in 2012 and Olivia Wilde indicating curiosity about another. Given Hollywoods appetite for that reheated and recycled, I suppose more dueling movies are coming. So what is next two films about earth-threatening comets? Wait thats recently been done! Exactly what do you think about the dueling movie trend? Would you view it like a sign that Hollywood is drained of ideas? Have you been more intrigued by the thought of competing "Snow Whitened" movies, or switched off in the prospect of two remarkably similar films opening inside the same year? Provide us with your ideas about the two Snow Whitened films, both Linda Lovelace biopics along with other dueling movies within the comments section as well as on Twitter!
